1. Status of reframing Extension
Spring is in the air! The sun is brighter, the days are getting longer. Surely the warmer temperatures are right around the corner! Seasons change right before our eyes, and Spring brings with it a sense of freshness and starting anew — revitalization. It invites us to not only reassess and improve ourselves personally, but to “reframe” ourselves organizationally so we are ready and able to meet the challenges of our future.

5. Alternative energy on the move
It has been a busy winter for many of our extension faculty and staff involved with renewable energy programs around the state. Our winter program started with a successful exhibit at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. We had good traffic at our exhibit, including visits from several state legislators culminating with a visit from Governor Rendell.
We have developed a small advisory group of faculty and educators to develop a plan for our renewable and alternative energy education programs. Our vision is to develop a range of educational activities that encompass a wide variety of energy issues from energy efficiency to feedstock assessment and production.

6. Land use planning
Stan Lembeck’s philosophy of land use and planning developed over many years.
“It’s very simple,” he says. “Every organization needs to plan. An organization needs to carry out its mission and a municipality’s mission is to provide services for the people of the municipality.”
Lembeck first encountered planning on a grand scale as an undergraduate. Now a professor emeritus of rural sociology, a certified planning instructor, a founding father of Pennsylvania Municipal Planning Education Institute (PMPEI) and chairman of that statewide board, he speaks on the subject with authority.

7. Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow
Pennsylvania needs strong local leaders to ensure a good future in business, industry, government and civic organizations. And Penn State University’s Cooperative Extension stands ready to help anyone and everyone develop the right mix of skills through its “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow” program. Commonly known as LTLT, the program’s curriculum was designed by a group of extension educators to address leadership gaps--or needs--they had discovered across the Keystone State. It is divided into four units, namely personal and interpersonal leadership skills, group/organizational leadership skills and community/public leadership skills.
